Ford Tire Care Advice & Tips

What kind of roads are you traveling on?

If you're like a majority of U.S. motorists, you've experienced very challenging road conditions lately. A study from TRIP, a national transportation research group, shows that 33 percent of major U.S. roads are in poor condition. Driving on these roads costs motorists an average of $377 in extra vehicle repairs.
Knowing this, you want to make sure your vehicle's tires are in optimum condition to handle the roads. The experts at County Motor Company Inc are here to help.

The advantages of keeping your tires properly inflated.

When your vehicle's tires are properly inflated, it can help you improve your fuel economy by 2 percent*. Proper inflation also optimizes your vehicles performance and handling, which will help you feel safer behind the wheel
A major cause of tire damage is improper inflation. Over time, your tires lose pressure which can cause irregular tread wear and poor gas mileage. On average, tires lose air at the rate of one pound per month. In colder temperatures, a tire will lose one pound of pressure for every 10-degree drop. A simple solution: check your tire pressure at least once a month for longer performance. Your vehicle may also be equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system. Displayed on your dashboard, it alerts you to sudden changes in tire pressure or low pressure in one or more of your tires.**

Knowing how to properly care for your tires will help you prolong their use, which will keep more money in your pocket. Even if your car is driven infrequently or for only a few miles, tires should be inspected at least once per month and before every long trip. As you inspect the tire, you should look for extreme or irregular tread wear, under-inflation, or damage (bulges, cracks, punctures).
A professional should inspect a tire if any of the conditions listed above-or continuous pressure loss-are present.

How to Check Your Tire's Air Pressure

The air pressure in your tires is important. A properly inflated tire keeps the tread healthy, increases safety while driving, extends your tire's life, and enhances fuel efficiency. To determine the correct air pressure for your car, truck, or SUV's tires, you must refer to the vehicle's owner's manual, in the glovebox, or on the driver's side doorjamb information sticker.
You can check your tire pressure using the following steps:

  1. Insert the pressure gauge into the tire's valve stem.
  2. The gauge extends out, revealing a number-your psi number.
  3. A hissing sound means air is escaping the tire.
  4. Compare the psi on the gauge with the recommended psi in the owner's manual.
  5. If they are a match, you're finished. If not, add or release air until it reaches the correct number.

How to Measure Your Tire Tread

It's important that you change your tires at the right time. Even the most careful person who's followed the rules must purchase a new tire when the tread wear is too much. But how can you determine if it's time to replace a tire(s).
You can conduct the penny test. Place a penny into the tire's tread groove. Make sure Lincoln's head is upside-down and facing you. If the entire head is visible, you need to replace your tires.
You may also look at the tread wear indicator. This indicator can be found less than an inch from the bottom of the tread groove. When you reach this level on a tire, it requires replacement.
The tire's tread can also reveal how you might be missing the mark in your tire care:

  • Wear in the tire's center means overinflation.
  • Wear on the tire's edges indicates underinflation.
  • Cups or dips in the tread suggests worn parts.
  • Sawtooth edges mean misaligned tires.
